Street Smart High
- Road safety
- Risk
- Resilience
Road crashes are one of the leading causes of death for our young people under the age of 25. The day a young driver gains their provisional license their crash rate increases 20 to 30 times.
“Street Smart High event demonstrates the realities of road trauma and gives drivers the knowledge they need to be safe drivers.”
Held in partnership with the Northern Territory Government, Towards Zero and the Motor Accident Compensation Commission
What happens at a Street Smart High event?
Street Smart High is open to students in years 10, 11 & 12 across the Northern Territory, and attendance is free.
On the day, students will:
- witness a simulated crash scene, including pre-and-post-crash analysis;
- hear from people whose lives have been affected by road trauma
- interact with leading community, Territory Government Police, Fire and Ambulance personnel and industry organisations and programs that aim to keep young people safe
- learn road safety skills and knowledge.

Teacher testimonials
AANT is committed to contributing to the reduction of road trauma on our roads. This is what some of our teachers and student say about Street Smart High.
Kathleen Middleton, Teacher -Darwin High
Please thank everyone you know for this fantastic presentation. I saw something similar before in 1995 and it never left me.
My students assure me they will never forget this and the messages. Evidence is a massive auditorium filled with teenagers who remained quiet.
Emma Strotifeldt, Year 12 Student -The Essington School Darwin
The Street-Smart High event was a sobering and important experience for all Year 11 & 12 students, many of whom have just received their own provisional licenses. I would recommend it to any and all students planning to learn how to drive.
Jade Dortmans, Teacher - Katherine High School
I just wanted to let you know how amazing the program was and how much the students at Katherine High School loved it. It was such an eye opener and I found that is just what these kids need to see. It will really make them think twice about their actions and the implications it has on not only themselves but on others.
Make sure your teen gets home safely
How AANT’s ‘Free Pass card’ works:
Getting home safety can be a big issue for teenagers, and they often put themselves in risky situations because they don’t know who to call or they’re afraid they’ll get in trouble.
To help, AANT has developed Free Pass Cards, which is a 'contract' between a beginner driver and a designated driver (their parents, for example).
The idea is for teenagers to sit down and talk about to do if they're in a risky situation and worried about getting home safely, like if a their planned designated driver's been drinking.
The designated driver can sign the card, which gives the teenager a free ride home, no questions asked.
How to use the Free Pass card:
- Download the Free Pass Card (PDF, 401KB)
- Chat to your family and friends
- Sign the card and keep it handy, just in case
