Street Smart High: Schools Information

Event Times

Due to the large number of students attending Street Smart High, schools should plan to arrive at the Darwin Convention Centre no later than 9:40am to allow time for your school to check in and for students to be seated by 9:50am ready for a 10am start.

9.40am: School arrival and check-in
9.50am: Students seated
10am: Street Smart High begins
2pm: Event concludes

Arrival & Check In

Bus Parking

Buses should drop students at the Darwin Convention Centre's main entrance, the Porte Cochere, before proceeding to their designated bus parking area.

Please refer to the Traffic Management Plan provided to your school before the event for bus access and parking arrangements.
 

School Check-In

On arrival, one teacher from each school must check in at the registration desk at the Porte Cochere.

Your school will receive an event pack containing information and materials for the day. Once checked in, please make your way to the auditorium and ensure your students are seated by 9.50am, ready for the event to begin at 10am.
 

Running Late?

If your school is delayed, please contact the Street Smart High team as soon as possible.

Schools arriving after 10am may need to wait before entering the auditorium until the simulated crash scene has finished.

Lunchtime & Expo

Lunchtime Expo

During the lunch break, students will have the opportunity to explore our interactive Street Smart High Expo, featuring organisations working across road safety, emergency services and services for young people.

Students are encouraged to move around the Expo, talk to exhibitors, take part in activities and find out more about the services and support available to them.

 

Student Lunches

Lunch is not provided for students at the event. Students will need to bring their own packed lunch, including a water bottle.

For the safety of all students attending Street Smart High, the Darwin Convention Centre will be in “lockdown” mode, which means no-one will be permitted to leave the building.

Reminder: Students will not be permitted to leave the Darwin Convention Centre to purchase food. If a student needs to leave the event early, they must have approval from a school staff member. A school staff member must accompany the student to an exit point and advise security.

 

Teachers' Lounge

A dedicated teachers' lounge will be available throughout the event for teachers and school staff.

Teacher Information

Supervision of Students

Student supervision remains the responsibility of school staff throughout the event.

We encourage teachers to sit amongst their students during the main sessions to help support appropriate behaviour and ensure adequate supervision.

Students will hear a number of people share very personal stories about their experiences with road trauma. Please remind students to be respectful of speakers and other attendees, and that mobile phones should not be used during the event.

 

Teachers' Lounge

Meeting Room 3 will be available as a dedicated teachers' lounge during the lunch break and throughout the event. Tea and coffee will be available for teachers and school staff, and screens will provide a live feed of the event taking place in the auditorium.

Student supervision remains the responsibility of school staff. Schools may wish to arrange a roster so teachers can take turns using the lounge while ensuring their students remain appropriately supervised.

 

Teachers' Lunch

A light lunch will be provided for teachers and school staff during the lunchbreak in the Teachers' Lounge in Meeting Room 3.

Student & Teacher Surveys

Feedback from students and teachers helps us understand the impact of Street Smart High and identify ways we can continue to improve the event.

 

Pre-Event Student Survey

Before attending Street Smart High, students will be asked to complete a short online survey about their existing road safety knowledge, attitudes and confidence.

The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and provides a baseline of students’ knowledge and confidence before the event, helping us measure the impact of the program.

We encourage schools to have as many students as possible complete the survey before the event.

 

Post-Event Student Survey

Students will be invited to complete a short online survey after the event. This helps us understand what students have taken away from Street Smart High and how their road safety knowledge and confidence may have changed.

The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.

 

Teacher Survey

We also value feedback from the teachers and staff who attend Street Smart High. The teacher survey provides an opportunity to share your observations of the event and suggestions for future programs.

Survey links and closing dates will be provided to schools closer to the event.
 

Student Wellbeing

Street Smart High includes real stories and content about road trauma that some students may find confronting or emotional.

A counsellor will be available on the day in Meeting Room 4 for any students who would like to talk to someone or need some additional support.

We encourage teachers to be mindful of the nature of the event and to check in with students who may need additional support during the day.
