IDP

The holidays are nearly here, and we know how exciting it is to finally take a break from the Territory’s heat and humidity.

Whether you’re dreaming of sun-soaked streets in Bali or wandering through Europe’s Christmas markets, there’s one thing you don’t want to forget: your International Driving Permit (IDP).

Trust us, it’s the little piece of paperwork that can save a lot of stress overseas.

Why You Need an IDP

Even with a valid Australian driver’s licence, you might still need an IDP. As travel writer Michael Gebicki experienced in Italy, “No IDP, no car” – car hire companies often refuse vehicles to travellers without one, even if they have a domestic licence (as reported by AAA).

AAA also warns that not all rental companies will ask for an IDP even when it’s legally required. “But driving without one where it’s a legal requirement could have an unhappy ending if you’re involved in an accident. You might be deemed an unlicensed driver, with unfortunate consequences”.

Popular destinations where an IDP is often required include:

  • Bali, Indonesia – essential for scooters and cars
  • Italy – winter driving conditions
  • Germany – winter conditions

Driving without an IDP where it’s required can lead to:

  • Being deemed unlicensed if involved in an accident
  • Insurance claims being denied
  • Fines or other legal complications

How an IDP Works

An IDP is a translation of your Australian licence into nine major languages, valid in over 150 countries. It proves you hold a current domestic licence and covers the classes of vehicles you’re licensed for.

AAA also highlights that an IDP can come in handy as a form of identification overseas and helps smooth interactions with local authorities if you need assistance. “While an IDP is proof that you hold a current domestic driver’s licence, you must also carry your domestic driver’s licence card with your IDP,” they note.

According to AAA, “It’s much less hassle to organise an IDP before leaving Australia than it is from overseas” – a simple precaution that can prevent fines, insurance issues, or worse.
