Eco-Friendly Stars is an environmental endorsement tailored to suit the accommodation industry.
The standards were developed through an alliance with GREEN GLOBE who delivers internationally recognized environmental programs to the travel and tourism industry.
Eco-Friendly STARS rewards commitment to simple environmental ‘good practices’ and provides property managers with a common sense system that is easy to implement and that reduces environmental impacts.
Eco-Friendly STARS does not change a property’s original STAR Rating but adds an important new level of endorsement. Best of all, the program empowers you to choose accommodation based on environmental friendliness.
Accommodation is awarded a Eco-Friendly STAR endorsement based on the following criteria (which form only a small part of the overall requirements).
Energy Efficiency
- Uses energy efficient light bulbs
- Displays signs reminding guests to turn of lights & air-conditioning
- Has a correct seal on doors & windows
Waste Minimisation
- Practices recycling
- Re-uses towels & linen on request
- Newspapers provided as an option
Waste Management
- No leaking taps
- Uses biodegradable cleaning products
- Uses recycled water on gardens
So how do you find Eco-Friendly STAR Rated properties?
It’s simple – just search the AANT’s online accommodation database and look for the Eco-Friendly STARS next to the property listing. If you're conducting a search, be sure to click on the ‘environmentally friendly’ option in the advanced search section to return only Eco-Friendly STAR Rated properties.
