The move towards five-star safety across the Australian vehicle fleet continues, with the Australian-made Holden Commodore utility receiving a five-star crash test rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) – the country’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate.

The ANCAP five-star rating is the first for any ute on the Australian market and means Holden now boasts a five-star Commodore fleet.

AANT Technical Manager, Mark Borlace, congratulated Holden on the rating and said it was further good news for Australian motorists, particularly tradespeople and those in regional areas.

"Australians are increasingly seeing more five-star vehicle safety ratings in showrooms around the country and across a wider range of models," Mr Borlace said.

"As well as the growing number of locally-made five-star vehicles now competing with similar imports, we have recently awarded Australia’s first five-star light commercial van rating and now the first five-star ute – this is great news for motorists and their families and even better that it is a locally-made vehicle."

Mr Borlace said that this rating compares to other recent ANCAP tests for the imported Proton Jumbuck and Great Wall Motors utes, which produced poor one and two-star ratings respectively.

"We know other Australian manufacturers are working hard to produce similar five-star utes for the Australian market and we look forward to testing those as they become available."

"The five-star ANCAP rating applies to all variants of the new Commodore ute, with the passenger compartment holding its shape well in the ANCAP crash tests, providing good airbag protection for the driver and passenger and presenting no knee hazards for the driver."

"In addition to the crash test performance, the ute comes with dual front airbags, seat-mounted side and head-protecting curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard features."

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, all Australian state governments and the New Zealand Government. For a full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings and other vehicle safety information, go to www.ancap.com.au
