Proposed Excise on LPG

LPG currently has no excise levied on it, will this change in the future?

In late December 2003, the Federal Government announced fuel excise reforms that would ultimately mean motorists using LPG pay would an extra 12.5cpl by 2015. This reform would be introduced in a staged introduction at the rate of 2.5cpl from 1 December 2011, increasing by 2.5cpl each financial year until the full 12.5cpl to be incorporated in 2015.

Currently, fuel excise (tax) does not apply to LPG, whereas petrol is taxed at 38.14cpl.

In today's terms, this will mean that in 2015, motorists will be paying approximately 20 per cent more for LPG when they fill up. However, it is anticipated that motorists using LPG in 2015 will still be paying significantly less than those motorists who fill up with petrol.
